White River Place

A Car Free Day Out around St Austell TC03

Grid Ref : E6

Just a short walk from the Bus and Train Station; head down High Cross Street, past the Holy Trinity Church towards Fore Street and White River Place can be found just below Fore Street.

White River Place’ in the heart of St Austell is one of only a handful of new retail-led developments to have opened in England this year. Its shopping line-up includes a large Wilkinson store, along with a high street fashion parade by Peacocks, New Look and Bonmarche. Halifax bank has also opened a branch, and Cornwall’s first ever Frankie and Benny’s American-style diner restaurant has been successfully trading since June 2009. Better still in 2010, several more stores are planning to move in; these include Game, Superdrug, Thorntons, Rowes Bakery and a special new store for the world-famous tourist hub, the Eden Project.

Part of the new centre includes a state-of-the-art four-screen cinema, which has proved extremely successful since its launch at the end of 2008 and has helped make White River Place an appealing evening destination, even once the shops have closed for the night!

The sensitively designed streetscape of White River Place, with its open public squares, adds another dimension to St Austell town centre; its arrival is being heralded a significant milestone for the town as a whole, and has marked a new and exciting chapter in St Austell’s history.

Best of all, White River Place has shown a true commitment to sustainable development, gaining a rare national accreditation for a sustainable retail centre through the development of hundreds of individual green measures. These measures included the local sourcing of materials used in construction, the provision of rainwater harvesting facilities for all its stores, and the implementation of an ongoing education and employment programme that has provided apprenticeships for the town’s young people and has given the local jobs market a long-term boost.

White River Place has been delivered by White River Developments and the South West RDA, in collaboration with Cornwall Council. It represents a major step towards future economic growth in St Austell, opening new avenues for employment and attracting greater numbers of visitors and shoppers to the town centre.

Supporting St Austell

White River Place is proud to support St Austell Discovery Map and pleased to have been attributed with a walk named after the development. This unique project highlights the variety of attractions the area has to offer to both residents and visitors. We are delighted that, since opening in October 2009, White River Place has been added to the region’s enviable line-up.
